Arts and Crafts Rocking Chair

There are many books written on the subject of Arts and Crafts furniture. This blog entry will not tell you anything that it isn’t already written. It is simply to state that an Arts and Crafts Home isn’t complete until there is at least one piece of furniture from the period.

Arts and Crafts furniture was often called "mission-style" furniture. No one is certain how it got that name. Some believe it is related to the philosophy of the movement, that is the furniture was functional and had a "mission" to be used. Others believe it was because the furniture was derivative of furniture designs found in Franciscan missions in California.

One of the hallmarks of an Arts and Crafts piece of furntiure was simplicity of form, without superfluous decoration, often exposing their construction. Another was truth to material, preserving and emphasizing the qualities of the materials used.

Since buying the home, among the many things we need to buy, we have been constantly searching for a first piece of furniture. Often searching in vain or to find a piece that we could not afford. Even reproduction pieces, while heirloom quality and well worth the price, were outside our initial budget.

However, I was pleased to find this piece on Craiglist for a reasonable price…and the kind lady even agreed to less than her asking price. I can assure you it has a good home. It is a perfect piece for the living room. The living room is really starting to take on a complete and comfortable feeling.
